There have been changes in population demographics nationally and globally, with greater recognition of the need to center diversity, equity, culture, and inclusion in training guidelines and professional practices. This interactive webinar will discuss a framework that includes four foundational aspects of increasing cultural understanding in evaluations that have been proposed by neuropsychologists. This will include a discussion about practical ways to increase relevant cultural knowledge, be reflective about self and other-awareness, develop culturally informed practice skills, and engage in action orientation that can dismantle inequities across multiple systems. The discussion will also include consideration for more global perspectives and clinical variables that have been less frequently incorporated into neuropsychological evaluations such as acculturation, systemic barriers, values and customs, and views about health and well-being. Overall, the role of these considerations for a future neuropsychology with more equitable care, research, and training opportunities will be emphasized.

Dr. Farzin Irani is in private practice in the greater Philadelphia area. She is a non-native English speaker with a multi-lingual, transnational, and bicultural world view. She completed her Ph.D. at Drexel University, clinical internship at Brown University, post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, and board certification through the American Board of Clinical Neuropsychology. She is actively involved in training graduate and post-doctoral trainees and has published ~50 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and encyclopedia entries. She recently edited a clinical handbook that assembled case studies from across the world to increase understanding of cultural diversity in neuropsychological assessment. She serves in leadership positions within several local and national professional organizations, with a focus on increasing justice, equity, diversity and inclusion in the field.
